Celebrating the Heliecal Rising of Sirius

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

On the 6th of August was the Heliacal Rising of Sirius (HRS) from Giza. Known as prt spt, meaning the ‘going forth of Sothis’ i.e. the heliacal rising of the star Sirius, this was the traditional New Year’s Day in ancient Egypt. In the Pyramid Age the HRS took place near the summer solstice, and roughly coincided with the start of the Inundation Season (Akhet).

Gouda is the son of Mohammad Abdel Mawgud Al Fayed, who was with Emile Baraize in 1926 when he discovered the tunnel at the rump of the Great Sphinx. It was Mohammad who informed Zahi Hawass and Mark Lehner in 1980 of the existence of this tunnel, after it had been ‘forgotten’ for 54 years)
